Hello, visitors of FOSDEM 2014 and everyone else.

This page contains first information about "Pyra", the new linux-based open handheld with physical keyboard that we have been working on for a while, and that was publically introduced at FOSDEM 2014. This place will be updated during the FOSDEM 2014 and for some time after it (last updated: YYYY-MM-DD).

What is Pyra?

Pyra is an open handheld that we have been working on for some time now. Some essential features of the Pyra that we can confirm at this time include:

• Clamshell formfactor, handheld sized
• Full Linux desktop, almost fully open software system (//TODO information on binary blobs), unbrickable bootloader
• Physical keyboard and gaming controls (QWERTY keyboard, action buttons, shoulder buttons, two analog pads, and a D-pad that was developed by DaveC)
• We are aiming for a long battery runtime (say, more than 10 hours or so, and we really mean it)
• USB host port(s?), 2 SD card slots, "and then some"
• High-quality audio hardware (except for the built-in speakers, because this is a small device) with integrated amplifier
• Full-HD touchscreen (resistive, with stylus), TV out
• Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, LTE option

The Pyra is essentially a community project, and because the goal is to have a nice, hacker-friendly device, not profit maximization, once the Pyra's hardware is finished it will need your help to get great software.

• 5" 1080x1920 screen (roughly ~20ms response time, resistive multitouch), plastic stylus included, stylus compartment in device case
• Carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic case (for high durability)
• Replaceable 4200mAh battery (and we're aiming for a long battery runtime)
• Three and a half ounces of black magic
